Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

The story begins 14 years after the catastrophic events of the previous film, “Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance.” Shinji Ikari, the protagonist and pilot of the giant bio-mechanical robot known as an Evangelion, awakens to a drastically transformed world. The once-familiar landscape is now a desolate wasteland, and humanity is on the brink of extinction.

Shinji finds himself in a mysterious floating city called “Wunder,” where he is greeted by unfamiliar faces and a grim atmosphere. He learns that the organization he once trusted, NERV, has undergone significant changes. Commanded by the enigmatic Misato Katsuragi, Wunder serves as humanity’s last line of defense against monstrous creatures called Angels.

Haunted by guilt and confusion, Shinji discovers that his actions during the climactic battle in the previous film have had far-reaching consequences. As he grapples with his own choices, he must confront the harsh reality that the world he knew has changed irreversibly.

The arrival of a new character, Kaworu Nagisa, further complicates Shinji’s emotional journey. A charismatic and mysterious individual, Kaworu befriends Shinji and offers him a unique perspective on their shared existence as pilots of the Evangelions. This unexpected connection fuels Shinji’s desire for understanding and companionship but also brings about unforeseen consequences.

As the plot unfolds, the film delves into themes of identity, self-worth, and the consequences of one’s actions. The fragile bonds between the characters are tested, and the weight of their choices becomes increasingly palpable. Betrayal, sacrifice, and ultimate redemption loom on the horizon, as Shinji and his comrades must confront their inner demons to save what remains of humanity.

The film won the Award of Excellence in the animation category at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival.
