The film begins with Shinji Ikari, the troubled protagonist, awakening after the cataclysmic events of the previous movie. The film was originally announced alongside Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo in 2008 and was slated for a 2015 release, but was delayed several times due to various production issues and the COVID-19 pandemic.
