The series begins when Koyomi, recovering from a vampire attack, discovers a fellow classmate named Hitagi Senjougahara. He quickly learns that Hitagi possesses a peculiar affliction—she weighs almost nothing. Drawn by his inherent desire to help others, Koyomi offers his assistance and becomes embroiled in a whirlwind of supernatural incidents.

As the narrative unfolds, Koyomi encounters various girls burdened by their own supernatural predicaments, each represented by a unique “-monogatari” word that reflects their individuality.
