“Darling in the FranXX” is a captivating and thought-provoking anime series that takes place in a distant future where humanity is on the brink of extinction. Set in a world where colossal creatures known as “Klaxosaurs” threaten human existence, the remnants of society have sought refuge in enormous mobile fortresses called “Plantations.”
The story primarily revolves around a group of young individuals known as “Parasites” who are raised in secluded environments known as “Birdcages.” These Parasites are trained to pilot massive humanoid robots called “FranXX,” which are the only weapons capable of combating the Klaxosaurs.
Our protagonist, a young boy named Hiro, finds himself in a state of disillusionment and discontentment with his life as a Parasite. Previously known as a talented pilot, Hiro has lost his ability to synchronize with a partner due to his emotional detachment. However, everything changes when he encounters a mysterious girl with horns on her head named Zero Two.
Zero Two is a unique and enigmatic character known as a “Half,” bearing both human and Klaxosaur characteristics. Renowned as the “Partner Killer,” she has a reputation for consuming the life energy of her previous partners. Despite her reputation, Zero Two is determined to find a true companion who can accept her for who she is.
Fascinated by Zero Two’s intriguing presence, Hiro volunteers to become her partner, disregarding the potential risks. Surprisingly, the duo’s compatibility defies all expectations, and Hiro discovers a renewed sense of purpose and belonging as they pilot the powerful FranXX named “Strelizia.”
As Hiro and Zero Two fight side by side, their relationship deepens, and they unravel the mysteries surrounding their own existence, the true nature of the Klaxosaurs, and the secrets hidden within the world they inhabit. Alongside their fellow Parasites, including the strong-willed Ichigo, the stoic Goro, and the lively duo Zorome and Miku, they navigate through the complexities of love, identity, and the burdens of their duty.
However, as they delve deeper into their mission, they uncover the sinister machinations of the APE (Apathy Energy) Council, the governing body that controls their lives and manipulates their destinies. The Parasites soon realize that the true enemy might not be the Klaxosaurs but the oppressive system that governs them, forcing them to question their purpose and fight for their freedom.
