In a not-so-distant future, the world has transformed into a seemingly perfect society controlled by a powerful system known as Sybil. “Psycho-Pass” is a gripping and thought-provoking anime that delves into the darkest corners of the human mind and questions the nature of free will and justice.

The story revolves around Akane Tsunemori, a young and idealistic woman who joins the Public Safety Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Division. Her world is governed by the Sybil System, a network that scans individuals’ mental states to determine their Crime Coefficient, an index that measures their potential to commit crimes. With this technology, law enforcement officers, known as Inspectors, and their Enforcer partners, who are latent criminals used to track down other criminals, strive to maintain social order.

Akane quickly realizes the grim reality of her job when she encounters Shinya Kogami, a former Inspector-turned-Enforcer whose Crime Coefficient deteriorated after an encounter with a ruthless criminal mastermind named Shogo Makishima. Makishima, possessing an exceptional intellect and a desire to expose the flaws of the Sybil System, becomes the focal point of the narrative as he orchestrates a series of heinous crimes to challenge the system’s control over society.

As Akane delves deeper into her duties, she faces moral dilemmas and wrestles with the ethical implications of the Sybil System. Alongside her colleagues, including the strict yet fair Inspector Ginoza, the brilliant analyst Shion, and the enigmatic Enforcer Kougami, she unravels the mysteries behind the crimes committed by Makishima and his twisted ideology.

Throughout the series, “Psycho-Pass” presents a grim and dystopian world where personal freedom is sacrificed in the name of security. It raises questions about the human capacity for evil, the influence of societal control on individual behavior, and the true meaning of justice. As the story unfolds, viewers are forced to confront their own beliefs and contemplate the fine line between order and oppression.

Background:

An edited version of the series received a rebroadcast starting July 10, 2014. 22 episodes of the original series were combined into eleven 46-minute long episodes with some scenes being slightly extended.

Psycho-Pass aired on Fuji Television’s noitaminA block. In the 2013 Newtype Anime Awards it was voted as fourth best title of the year. Its 11th episode was awarded “Best Episode” in the Noitamina 10th anniversary fan vote. It has spawned several video-game spin-offs, a novel series and a manga series as well.
